Date: 31 July 2025
Dear HPC3 users,
The HPC3 service is scheduled to end on 31 Jan 2026, as most of its hardware has been in service for 6 years and the original hardware warranties have expired. This arrangement is in accordance with our community cluster policy for effective allocation of data center space and efficient power usage. Users are strongly encouraged to start the migration of their work now to our fourth generation of High-Performance Computing cluster, HPC4, to ensure continued support and access to reliable and up-to-date computing infrastructure.
With the retirement of the HPC3 infrastructure, a small number of compute nodes that are still under warranty will be migrated to HPC4. This will allow contributors to continue access to these resources for the duration of the remaining warranty period. Expired nodes will be decommissioned with reusable components evaluated before disposal. Contributors may request ownership transfer to repurpose the compute nodes for non-critical tasks. Contributors will be notified individually regarding migration or decommission arrangements.
HPC4 accounts are project-based, allowing research members to work, run programs, and share files within a project environment. If you do not have an account in HPC4, please refer to the following links for account and subsidy application for HPC4.
Users may contact ITSO at hpc4support@ust.hk for advice or guidance regarding the migration of existing programs to HPC4. Should you have any inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Regards,
Kenneth Cheng
