Pre-emptable Queue and Partition Changes

Date: 15 Aug 2025

Dear HKUST SuperPOD Users,

We wish to announce the following updates to HKUST SuperPOD designed to enhance resource efficiency and accommodate a broader spectrum of workloads.

Pre-emptable Partition Now Available

A new pre-emptable partition (“preempt”) has been introduced to utilize idle resources on reserved nodes. Jobs submitted to this partition are protected from cancellation for 15 minutes. After this period, they may be terminated without notice if the reserved resources are reclaimed.

This queue is suitable for interrupt-tolerant workloads such as prototyping, testing, and data processing. Users are advised to implement checkpointing or submit jobs in restartable segments to minimize disruption. Cancelled jobs will not be automatically resumed or resubmitted.

Decommission of “Large” Partition

To improve overall resource utilization, the “large” partition has been decommissioned. The “normal” partition has been optimized to accept and prioritize jobs requiring more GPUs, enabling fairer and more efficient scheduling.

Further details of these changes can be found in the following webpages

We encourage you to take advantage of these changes to accelerate your development and workflows.   For any questions or feedback, please contact spodsupport@ust.hk
