Generative AI Usage Guidelines
HKUST encourages its members to embrace generative AI tools to enhance productivity, support knowledge advancement, and foster innovation. To ensure responsible and ethical use, please adhere to this guideline when using generative AI tools.
Generative AI Tools
ITSO helps HKUST members use generative AI by offering a set of tools that they can access. Please refer to the Generative AI Tools webpage below for a list of tools available to HKUST members.
Responsible and Ethical Use
- Users shall not use generative AI tools for any unlawful, harmful, or malicious activities, including but not limited to fraud, harassment, defamation, or infringement of rights.
- Always verify and fact-check AI-generated outputs carefully, as generative AI may produce inaccurate or fabricated information ("hallucinations").
- Be aware that generative AI systems may reflect biases or discriminatory tendencies present in their training data. Users are responsible for critically evaluating AI outputs and reporting any biased or discriminatory content encountered.
- When appropriate, acknowledge or label AI-generated content to maintain transparency and uphold academic integrity.
Data Privacy and Security
- Most of the commercial generative AI tools have stated that users’ submitted data may be used for training and product enhancement. Users are advised not to use confidential HKUST documents in those tools unless they are desensitized.
- Avoid inputting confidential, sensitive, or personal data into generative AI tools.
- Comply with HKUST’s data protection policies and relevant laws when using AI tools, ensuring personal data privacy is safeguarded.
